North set off at the age of 41 to travel the world and paint its tropical plants and flowers in their natural habitat. Encouraged by such friends as Darwin, Hooker, Galton and Duff Gordon, she spent 15 years producing the collection of paintings which is now housed in the Marianne North Gallery at Kew. She travelled in every tropical continent, painting in Borneo, Java, Ceylon, India, Australia, New Zealand, the Seychelles, Brazil and Chile.
