128pp Illustrated Hardback. It is perhaps an apochryphal story that the site of Britain's most important rail centre was decided by a ham sandwich! A local worthy and land owner was entertaining Brunel at a picnic in his field and kept pressing the great man on the suitability of Swindon as a site for the Great Western Railway to build their rail yard. Whatever the truth of this tale, Swindon Railway Village was to become the biggest single employer in the town.b/w illus endpapers. b/w frontis. 9.5.x7. Profuse b/w illus. AS NEW.
